December 2013

November was busy but December will be even busier.
A great Veteran’s Day filled with activities was topped off by a wonderful dinner.  The poppy drives raised over $1200.
We were one pint short on our 3 December Red Cross Blood Drive.
My thanks to Albert Crawshaw and Ken Rowe for their participation in the Christmas parade – what a cold night it was.
Finally thanks to Bill Reed, Ken Rowe and Don Fink for help in putting up the city’s holiday decorations.

Sunday, 15 December – District 6 meeting at 1:00 PM in Glenns Ferry.  No regular meeting this month.
16-19 December - Mornings, starting at 9:00 AM – Preparations for the annual Glenns Ferry Food/Toy Basket program.
Tuesday, 17 December – In the afternoon we will need volunteers to pack over 2 tons of potatoes from the storage barns.
Thursday, 19 December 9:00 AM – Distribution of Baskets
Monday, 23 December – Idaho Food Bank Distribution from the Veteran’s Hall
9-11 January, 2014 – Mid-Winter VFW Conference in Boise

The post still needs two more new members to be 100%.  Welcome to our three newest members: Don Wood and Vincent Mangione (Vietnam Veterans) and Col Mike  Ballek the Operation Group Commander at MHAFB.

The Post donated 55 turkeys and 55 hams for at the November Food Bank.  Recipients really appreciated getting them for Thanksgiving.
At the District meeting on the 15th of December we will recognize all of the District winners for VOD, Patriot Pen and Teacher’s of the Year programs.   Glenns Ferry will recognize three of our local winners: Sage Wootan took first place in the Patriot Pen and Dominick Carl took second place.  Mr. Robb Spriggs was selected as the High School Teacher of the Year.
After suffering some severe injuries from a fall from a ladder last month we are happy to report that Ralph Winterbottom has returned from Salt Lake and is now at the Veteran’s Rehab Center in Boise and is getting better every day.  You can call him on his cell phone (598-0725).
It is that time of year to help the needy.  Remember “No one does more for the Veterans” than the VFW.
Have a great holiday season, be safe and stay warm.

As always, since it is the awards dinner for youth and teachers on Sunday the 15th we will have quite a few extra for the meal, so please plan accordingly with the dish that you bring.  The Neals will be doing the ham.  Also bring a small wrapped package for the door prize raffle and make it for male, female or youth.  We try to make sure all the students and their siblings get a door prize.
If you wish to donate (money or food items) to the local Basket program we will collect it on Sunday. Also if you want to help sort canned goods we can use your help on the mornings of December 16-19.
Thanks to all who have paid their 2014 dues.  Your membership is greatly appreciated.
