Youth Essay (Patriot’s Pen)

A National Youth Essay Program, designed to give school students the opportunity to voice their opinion covering an announced theme and improve their writing skills, while they compete for worthwhile awards and prizes. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and it’s Ladies Auxiliary hope that every junior high school in the country will provide the opportunity for it’s students to take part in this program. Through classroom study projects and special assignments, students will be motivated, while writing and researching, to express their opinion about their personal responsibilities and understanding of the announced theme.

Students must be in 7th or 8th grade and properly enrolled in a public, private, parochial high school or a home study program in the United States, it’s territories and possessions or enrolled in an overseas school as a dependent of U.S. military or U.S. civilian personnel. (Foreign exchange, former first place winners, and adults excluded).

The competition starts and is conducted at the Post level. The Post winner ($100.00 Savings Bond) is advanced to the District, where they will compete against other Post winners in our District for additional prizes ($200.00 Saving Bond), etc and that winner goes on to Department competition ($500.00 Savings Bond). The first Place National Winner receives a $10,000.00 Savings Bond. Prizes and awards can vary, higher or lower, than the suggested prizes.
